Dear Sirs,
We beg to acknowledge receipt of your private & confidential lines of the 14th inst. a copy of which we have submitted to M. Thornley of MM. Wilson, Sons & C° Ltd. in their entirety.
Meanwhile with reference to the Exports of Raw Gotten from Great Britain to Sweden, Norway, Denmark & Holland during the months of March & April 1914 & 1915 respectively - we had seen in the papers the comparative figures which you refer to & in regard to which the "Syren" in its current issue naively remarks "Really it seems a pity that the Government should put the British firms engaged in this trade to the trouble of sending their consignments by these roundabout routes. Why not allow them to ship the goods direct to Germany?"
In the meantime we take note of "Mr" (not "Sir", as we had erroneously described him in ours of the 14th inst.) Oswald Sanderson's opinion as to the duration of the War and we sincerely hope his forecast may not be realised, although we are beginning to think it is likely to be a much more prolonged affair than many optimists seem to imagine.
